Wild Horses and Burros

Today, the BLM manages and protects 177 herds of wild horses and burros on 27 million acres of public lands across 10 western states.

It also holds and cares for 62,000 wild horses in off-range pastures and facilities, costing taxpayers $108.5 million in 2023.

Thanks to an incentive program that provides $1,000 per adoption, annual adoptions of wild horses and burros have more than doubled in the past five years.

Public-private partnerships to support the BLM’s adoption incentive program are a pathway for positive benefits for wild horses and burros, and for ecosystem health. Together we can help identify innovative solutions to balance the needs of rangeland health and maintaining healthy populations.
